Nursery Manager

Nursery Establishment & Strategic Planning Lead the complete planning, design, establishment, and development of plant nurseries from ground zero. Manage nursery operations across multiple locations in Uganda. Develop production strategies aligned with plantation, agroforestry, and permaculture requirements. Establish SOPs, quality standards, and best practices for nursery operations. Production Planning & Monitoring Develop nursery production plans based on plantation requirements and project timelines. Monitor plant inventory, production cycles, survival rates, quality, and overall nursery output. Implement effective tracking and quality-control systems. Prepare periodic operational reports and provide strategic recommendations to senior management. Plant Propagation & Technical Management Oversee propagation using: Seeds Grafting Budding Cuttings Layering Other appropriate propagation techniques Manage growing media preparation, irrigation, and nutrient management. Implement integrated pest and disease management systems. Ensure consistent production of healthy, high-quality planting material. Select appropriate propagation and production methods for tropical and subtropical plant species. Infrastructure & Operations Plan and manage nursery infrastructure, propagation systems, irrigation, and related facilities. Ensure efficient utilization of nursery resources and production capacity. Develop systems that can be scaled according to plantation and agroforestry expansion requirements

Team Leadership & Development Build, lead, and manage nursery teams across multiple locations. Recruit, train, and develop nursery staff. Provide technical training on propagation, plant health, nursery practices, and quality standards. Establish performance standards and monitor team productivity. Ensure operational efficiency and consistency across all nursery sites. Project Coordination & Strategic Contribution Collaborate closely with Farm Managers, Agronomists, Permaculture Specialists, and Project Teams. Support agroforestry, regenerative agriculture, plantation expansion, and sustainability initiatives. Contribute to long-term nursery expansion and development strategies. Ensure nursery operations align with the organization's environmental and sustainability objectives. Must-Have Skills Strong hands-on expertise in plant propagation. Proven experience establishing nurseries from scratch. Strong knowledge of nursery infrastructure and propagation systems. Deep understanding of tropical and subtropical plant species. Strong nursery production and plant-health management skills. Experience with irrigation, growing media, nutrients, and pest/disease management. Strong leadership and multi-location team management abilities. Excellent planning, organizational, and operational management skills. Ability to design, establish, and scale large nursery operations.
