Position: URBAN95 CITY COORDINATOR, UDAIPUR CITY
Based in: Udaipur, Rajasthan
About: Immediate start of work, full-time
Duration: 1-year contract, renewable
We are looking to recruit a city coordinator to help orient city services and the urban environment
to children between 0-5 years of age and parents of children of this age.
The project is implemented with the support of the Bernard van Leer Foundation (BvLF), as part of
the Urban95 international programme that the Foundation supports in various cities around the
world. In partnership with the Udaipur Municipal Corporation, Urban95 encourages the planning
and design of cities from a children's perspective—from 95 cms, the average height of a healthy 3-
year old.
The project aims to work very closely with the Udaipur Municipal Corporation to demonstrate
Urban95 and its implementation.
The Urban 95 city coordinator will report jointly to the Udaipur Municipal Commissioner and the
BvLF Country Representative, and will work under the guidance of a project steering committee
chaired by the Municipal Commissioner and composed of city representatives. He or she will
provides operational, planning, managerial, technical and coordination support to all aspects of
the Udaipur Urban 95 project operations.
URBAN95 FOCUS AREAS:
• Green public space: Transforming existing physical spaces into places for young children to
play and explore nature, and for their caregivers to meet and rest.
• Mobility for families: Making it possible for caregivers and young children to walk or cycle
to healthcare, childcare, a safe place to play, and a source of healthy food.
• Data-driven decision-making: Collecting neighbourhood-level data on young children and
caregivers and using it to better target resources and facilitate coordination across sectors.
• Parent coaching: Providing parents and other caregivers with information on early
childhood development through the existing services and structures.
KEY COMPETENTICES, TECHNICAL BACKGROUND, AND EXPERIENCE
• Master’s degree in at least one of the following disciplines: urban planning, transport
planning, architecture, development economics, or related – urban policy, sustainable
urbanization. Experience in the areas of basic service delivery (i.e. public health, education,
sanitation, and service delivery in Urban Local Bodies) a plus.
Experience in the public sector or in an organisation that engages in consulting and/or
formulating a strategy for the public sector in large scale projects in at least one of the
following areas: project leadership, policy formulation, and project implementation in
areas that are directly related to the tasks detailed in the job description.
8-10 years of professional work experience at the national or state levels in urban
development / planning, implementation, M&E, and/or managing of urban programmes.
Current knowledge of urban policy, advocacy, and development issues as well as excellent
knowledge of urban inequities.
Basic knowledge on Early Childhood Development (ECD) or ability to acquire a basic level of
knowledge quickly.
Experience working within a results-oriented non-profit, foundation, and/or municipality
required. Experience working with municipalities to develop programs that have
demonstrated results a plus.
Ability to manage urban projects to improve responses to the needs of the target
population according to a municipal work plan, such as adapting the public space, early
childhood frameworks, making parents aware of the knowledge and more.
Identify and document case studies, innovations, and best practices.
Experience in forming working relationships and building complex collaborations with
various entities, such as municipal departments, other government agencies, citizen
organizations, non-profit organizations, the business sector, external suppliers, and more.
Establish and maintain excellent working relations with the concerned departments at the
Udaipur Municipal Corporation.
Provide handholding support to partner and key stakeholders for effective implementation
of the project.
Experience in building and managing a budget. Track budgets monthly and guide partner
for effective fund utilization.
Experience in documenting project progress and preparing periodic reports. Monitoring of project progress on project deliverables. Periodic review and verification of MIS data.
Preparation of monthly updates and brief reports.
